Faculty Guidance: Personal Care Attendant

Best Practices for Interacting with a PCA in the Learning Environment:

  • Address the student directly when interacting (i.e., look at the student when speaking)
  • If the student’s disability affects communication, the PCA may verbalize the student’s comments. The student and the PCA have established a non-disruptive means of communication prior to class. For example, the student may use a communication board and the PCA may read the student’s comments or questions aloud.
  • If you have been notified by ODS that a student will have a PCA present in the learning environment, there is a possibility that this student may also utilize a classroom assistant who provides academic support (i.e., scribing in-class assignments, using a calculator, etc.).
  • A PCA is not an academic participant and therefore should not ask questions, make comments, take notes, or record activities. The role of the PCA is to be available (in the classroom or close by) to provide personal services to the student as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between a PCA and a classroom/lab assistant?

A PCA provides personal care to the student, such as repositioning the student, removing materials from a backpack, assisting the student with communication, and attending to the student’s personal needs. A classroom/lab assistant performs tasks to make classroom activities accessible to the student such as scribing, measuring, using a calculator, etc. If ODS is aware, ODS will provide information in advance to faculty regarding whether a PCA or classroom/lab assistant will be present in their class.

How do I know if the student or the PCA is answering a question in my class?

If the student’s disability affects communication, the student will choose an effective way to communicate. This may include technology such as a voice box, communication board, typing on a device, etc. This could also include the PCA verbalizing the student’s comments if it is clear, it is not the PCA’s own comments. Before attending class, the PCA and the student will have established a non-disruptive mode of communication between themselves.

Who employs a PCA and classroom/lab assistant?

PCAs are employed by the student to provide personal services. Classroom or lab assistants are employed by ODS to provide accommodation.

If I have questions or concerns regarding the behavior of a PCA in my classroom, who should I talk to?

PCAs are held to the same standard of conduct as any UA student. If you have concerns regarding a PCA’s behavior, a discussion with the student in a timely manner is recommended first. If your concerns are not resolved after this discussion, please contact ODS. For violations to the student Code of Conduct, please contact the conduct office.
