Definition
Behavioral or mental health disabilities encompass a range of syndromes and conditions characterized by different types and degrees of emotional, developmental, cognitive, and/or behavioral manifestations. The source for understanding the exact nature of these conditions is typically the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification of Diseases: Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders (ICD).
Common subtypes include but are not limited to:
- Anxiety disorders (i.e., Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Specific Phobia)
- Bipolar Disorder
- Depressive disorders
- Eating disorders
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
- Substance Use Disorder
Documenting Behavioral Health Conditions
Due to the often episodic or transitory nature of behavioral health conditions, ODS requires documentation of the frequency, duration, and functional impact of the student’s current limitations and need for accommodations. The nature and severity of the condition, as well as its impact on the academic environment, must be supported by clinical observation and objective evidence, not just prior accommodations or student self-report.
