Make-up Tests

The Flexible Attendance and Deadlines accommodation entitles students to at least one make-up test beyond the syllabus provisions. Make-up tests may be administered:

  • within 1 week of the original test date
  • during a departmental make-up date as specified on the course syllabus
  • at the ODS Testing Center

Note: The Testing Agreement allows instructors to indicate parameters for make-up quizzes or tests. The ODS Testing Center proctors make-ups on Fridays, during departmental make-up days as indicated on the syllabus, or during University study week.

Flex Plan options for make-up tests

When completing a Flex Plan, instructors will Indicate a plan for missed quizzes and tests from the following options:

  • A make-up quiz/test will be provided for 1 missed test. A second missed test will be replaced by the final exam grade.
  • A make-up quiz/test will be provided for 1 missed test. The grade for a second missed test will be dropped.
  • A make-up quiz/test will be provided for 1 missed test. The grade for a second missed test will be calculated based on the average of the remaining test grades.
  • Make-up tests must be completed within 48 hours of the original test date due to the course's scaffolded structure. Each lesson builds on the previous one, making timely completion of assessments essential for continued progress. If a disability-related event prevents a student from completing a make-up test within 48 hours, the missed test grade will be replaced as specified in the Additional Comment box.
  • This course permits flexibility beyond the options listed above. Details are provided in the Additional Comment box.
  • This course does not administer tests/quizzes as part of the grade.

Examples of Scaffolded Learning Impacting Make-up Test Timelines

Introductory Math Course

Scaffolded Design: Students must understand limits and derivatives before moving on to integrals and applications. Each topic is prerequisite to the next.

Flex Plan Rationale: “This course builds step-by-step, with each topic depending on a solid understanding of the one before it. Students must grasp basic math concepts before they can tackle more advanced problems. Missing class can lead to gaps that make it difficult to keep up with future material and assessments. To stay on track, make-up tests must be completed within 48 hours of the original test date. In limited cases, a drop grade may be offered instead.”

Introductory Chemistry Course

Scaffolded Design: The course builds from structure and bonding to increasingly complex reaction mechanisms. Mastery of each reaction type is essential for subsequent content.

Flex Plan Rationale: “In this course, each week builds on the last.  You will learn reaction mechanisms and chemical behaviors that stack up over time. To understand more advanced topics, you need a solid grasp of the earlier ones. That’s why staying engaged each week is key to your success.  If you miss a test, you must make it up within 48 hours to maintain progess. In rare cases, a drop grade may be allowed instead.”

Foundational Computer Programming Course

Scaffolded Design: Students learn syntax, control structures, functions, and object-oriented programming in order. Early topics are required to write functional programs in later assignments.

Flex Plan Rationale: “This programming course builds skills step-by-step, starting with basic syntax and logic, then moving into more complex functions and object-oriented design. You must show mastery of early assignments before moving forward.  Missing important lessons or assessments makes later modules harder. To stay on schedule, any make-up work/tests must be done within 48 hours of the original due date. In rare cases, a drop grade may be allowed instead.”

Introductory Language Course

Scaffolded Design: Vocabulary, grammar, and verb tenses build over time. Communicative tasks require previously introduced structures.

Flex Plan Rationale: “Language learning builds over time. We begin with basic vocabulary and present-tense verbs, which are needed to form complete sentences. Future lessons build on what you have already learned, so regular participation is necessary for improving your speaking and understanding.  If you miss a test, you must complete it within 48 hours to maintain progress. In rare cases, a drop grade may be offered instead.”

Visual Arts Course

Scaffolded Design: Students move from line and shape to perspective, shading, and composition. Each new technique is dependent on mastering prior ones.

Flex Plan Rationale: “This studio course helps you improve drawing skills through a series of exercises that get more challenging over time. You must practice and get feedback on basic skills like contour drawing and perspective before moving on to more advanced work like composition or figure drawing.  Missing classes slows progress and affects skill development. If you miss an assessment, you must complete it within 48 hours to maintain progress. In some cases, a drop grade may be given instead.”

Basic Clinical Skills Course

Scaffolded Design: Practical skills like hand hygiene, vital signs, and medication administration build in complexity and are practiced in sequence.

Flex Plan Rationale: “This course takes a hands-on, skills-based approach and you must show mastery of one skill before moving on to the next. For example, you must first learn proper sterile techniques before taking part in simulated wound care.  Missing class or assessments breaks this learning chain. To stay on track, make-up assessments must be completed within 48 hours of the original date. In some cases, a drop grade may be allowed instead.”
