Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

ODS provides accommodations for Deaf or hard of hearing students, including sign language interpreting, real-time captioning (CART), and closed captioned videos.

The Sensory Accommodations Specialist collaborates with students to assess course-specific needs and coordinates interpreters or transcriptionists for in-person or online classes. Instructors are notified of interpreting, CART, and captioning requirements.

Permitted ASL interpreters are available in the Tuscaloosa and surrounding area, along with video remote interpreting (VRI). Transcriptionists are available to provide CART (Communication Access Real-time Transcription) in the classroom or remotely.

Students may also request services for extracurricular or co-curricular events. If the event has a contact listed for accommodation requests, please start by contacting that individual. If no event contact is listed, please reach out to the Sensory Accommodations Specialist for support.
