Confidentiality

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, information about a student’s disability and accommodations is confidential. ODS maintains all such records securely, and only ODS staff have access. This information is not shared with others on campus, nor does it appear on transcripts or diplomas.

Students choose whether to disclose disability-related information to instructors or staff. When requesting accommodations, students send an accommodation letter to instructors, which lists only approved accommodations—not diagnoses.

ODS cannot release any information without the student’s written consent. While students may sign a FERPA release for educational records, disability-related information is separate and requires an ODS-specific Release of Information form. Students may sign this form once they complete an ODS application or after.

ODS does not share disability information with employers or external organizations without permission. Students must complete a Release of Information to request documentation or authorize disclosure.

Note to Parents and Guardians

Once enrolled, students are considered adults and are responsible for managing their accommodations. Developing self-advocacy and communication skills is essential. Parents are encouraged to support their student’s independence rather than managing the process on their behalf.
