Office of Disability Services Text Conversion Policies and Procedures
Students must be registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) and
approved for text conversion services by the director of ODS before conversion
services can begin. Students must also be registered at The University of
Alabama at the time text conversion is requested.
Before services are implemented, students must meet with the Accommodations Specialist to discuss text conversion options.
Students must own a physical copy of the textbooks before they can be converted to alternative formats. Students are responsible for delivering their textbooks to ODS. Textbooks must be original condition. Textbooks will be cut and spiral bound and returned to student by the end of the semester upon return of tapes/CDs. The bookstore will not buy back the books but student may still resell them to individuals.
There is a minimum 2 week turn around after ODS receives textbooks before first converted assignment is completed.
Notify ODS without delay concerning any schedule changes, i.e. adding or dropping classes.
Student will not copy, reproduce, or share any of the specialized format texts, nor allow anyone else to do so, as this is a violation of Federal copyright laws.
For each textbook to be converted, students will submit an “Alternative Format Textbook Request Form” a minimum of six (6) weeks prior to the first day of classes.
Contact faculty as soon as you register for courses. Ask the instructor for textbook information including editions, author, publisher, ISBN number, and order chapters are covered. A syllabus is the preferred way to receive this information. ODS can provide assistance in locating instructor contact information.
If a syllabus has not been provided earlier, then you must provide ODS with a class syllabus that designates required reading during the first week of class.
Student is responsible for picking up materials as soon as you are notified of completion (check your e-mail). Check your material upon receipt to ensure there are no problems. If you notice a problem, notify ODS immediately.
